The Sharps rifle is a single-shot breech-loading rifle with a falling block action operated by the trigger guard.
It was designed by Christian Sharps (* November 1, 1810, Washington, New Jersey; † March 12, 1874, Vernon) and manufactured by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company. The rifle was patented in 1848 and production began in 1850.
Sharps carbines and rifles were tested by the US Army from 1851 and acquired in limited numbers.
After the outbreak of the Civil War, the weapon was used in large numbers, although the troops' main armament was still muzzle-loaders. The Sharps rifle fired paper cartridges, but it did not use percussion primers for ignition, but rather primers that were automatically placed between the piston and the hammer when the hammer was pulled. This made reloading easier, especially when used on horseback.
Sharps Rifles are still used today by black powder shooters in shooting sports and for hunting. Replicas are mainly used, but originals are also used.
These weapon replicas are functional but not fireable.
Length of the weapon: 101 cm
Material: metal and wood
Please note: According to the Swiss Weapons Act (as of 2020), a weapons import permit must be obtained when importing imitation weapons (in this case decorative weapons or decorative firearms) into Switzerland, as they must be registered there. I can send the items in question to you without any problem, but you will usually have to collect your package yourself from the responsible customs office, presenting the necessary papers.
Important information about the replica
I would like to point out that the manufacturer produces this replica exclusively for display and decorative purposes. It is not suitable as a toy or for excessive mechanical stress. All moving parts are used solely to ensure a historically authentic appearance and for occasional functional demonstrations.
This replica is made from non-weapon-grade materials, is not fireable and cannot be made fireable at any time. We advise against improper or excessive use of the mechanism and against firing dry or empty shots. This can lead to damage to the parts that collide or move.
The improper use of this article and any modifications to the article, e.g. to change the appearance or function, are always at your own risk. Please note that damage resulting from improper use or modifications can lead to loss of warranty claims.
