Flintlock pistols were the weapons most commonly used by pirates in the 18th century.

They had a flint or flintstone that, when touched by the hammer, created a spark that ignited the gunpowder. All of these weapons had to be manually reloaded after each shot. The ammunition, which was inserted through the barrel opening, consisted of gunpowder, the projectile and a ball of paper that served as a cap to compress the other two components in the barrel.

In battle, these weapons were usually used for one shot, as reloading was very slow and there was usually no time for it. Therefore, the fighters had to draw their sabers or swords afterwards or use the axe of the pistol, as there was no time to reload.
